“PNT Digital with Inductotrace option ” - respiratory inductive plethysmographe  RIP

Respiratory Monitoring

*   Non-Invasive

*   Comfortable to wear

*   Quantitative Tidal Volume

*   Breathing Patterns

*   Adult - Pediatric - Neonate

Principle of operation

Ø       The “Digital Inductotrace” is a respiratory inductive plethysmographe RIP, designed for non invasive respiratory monitoring which brings the combination of accuracy (± 10% of spirometry), reliability, and versatility in a lot of physiological measurement applications.

Ø       Two elastic bands with insulated wires called “Inductobands” wrapped around the chest and abdomen provide signals through frequency oscillators to a Digital Calibrator/Demodulator Unit.  Any changes in cross-sectional area of thoracic and abdominal regions (Inspiration-Expiration) provide a proportional and linear change in coil inductance from “Inductobands” and measure ribcage and abdomen compartmental volume excursions in amplitude and phase.

Ø       Unlike other devices for measuring chest and abdominal wall movement, can be calibrated with a pneumotachometer or a spirometer to provide not only the pattern of breathing but actual tidal volumes and phase regardless of position changes of the patient.

Features

·         The patient can breathe freely and naturally, this eliminates artifacts and measurement errors introduced by the interaction of mouthpieces or masks.  (interaction on respiration level, tidal volume, hyperventilation,  etc…)

·         Less discomfort for the patient  which means long term monitoring

·         Large alpha numerical and graphical display

·         High sensitivity, stability and linearity over the full range of inductive plethysmography

·         Selection of AC or DC coupling and full control of Inductive Plethysmography gains

  • Sampling rate at 250 pts/sec (high definition of onset of mechanical inspiration)
  • 4 Analog output of Inductive Plethysmography waveforms for polygraph interface +/- 1V, 5V ,10V DC for  Vth, Vab, Vsum and Fsum when used as a Respiratory Inductive Plethysmograph  (RIP) or integrated devices  spirometer, capnometer etc…
  • 4 Analog inputs for temporary or continuous simultaneous display and recording of signals from other devices

Applications      (See Bibliography)

Ø       Breathing pattern monitoring

·         Non-Invasive Ventilation in acute Respiratory Failure

·         Apnea/Hypopnea and Upper Airway Flow Limitation

·         Respiratory Drive and Breathlessness (Dyspnea)

·         Depression of Respiratory Drive in Pain Management

·         Respiratory rehabilitation

·         Hemi thoracic Inductive Plethysmography

·         Substance Abuse

·         Sleep Disorders  (detection of obstructive or central apnea, hypopnea, Cheyne-Stokes, etc…)

·         Respiratory Efforts and Swallows from Neck Inductive Plethysmograph

Ø       Respiratory Mechanics

·         Forced expiratory volume

Fig. 1 & 2 - Breathing Abnormalities During Steep.  Martin Tobin, MB, MRCPI,- Martin Cohn, MD; Marvin Sackner, MD; Arch lntem, Med.; Vol 143, June 1983.

Fig 1. - Central sleep apnea.  There is absence of abdominal (ABD), rib cage (RC), and sum (VT) movements during central apnea associated with small fall of arterial oxygen saturation (02Sat) measured via ear oximetry.

Fig 2. - Obstructive sleep apnea.  This depicts obstructive apnea terminated by deep breaths and another obstructive apnea terminated by three deep breaths.  Apnea in midportion of recording is marked by absence of sum movements (VT) despite respiratory efforts indicated by paradoxic movement of rib cage (RC) (movement downward) and abdominal (ABD) (movement upward) compartments that is associated with marked fall in arterial oxygen saturation (02Sat) measured by ear oximetry.
